Questions Answered
April 19, 2001

Every so often I get questionnaires in my e-mail from well-meaning but misguided friends who want me to fill it out myself and pass it along to other people.  I usually don't fill them out. I decided that I would dig one of those spammy questionnaires and post the answers here. What the hell, it beats writing something original.

Name: John Heaton

Nickname: JHeaton, Shaft

School: Apparently questionnaires like this are geared toward people who are still in school, because all of the questionnaires I looked through included a question about school and my favorite classes. But I'm old, and I haven't been enrolled at any school since 1997. I went to Wheaton Central High in Wheaton, Illinois and Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. I've also taken classes at North Central College, College of DuPage and the George Washington University.

Boxers or Briefs: Briefs. Me and President Clinton, according to The Weakest Link last night.  That's a pretty funny show, by the way.  I don't know if I'll ever watch it again, because I'm never home on Mondays and it doesn't seem worth taping.

Bacon bits or croutons: Well, both usually. If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably pick bacon bits.

Favorite salad dressing: There's this really excellent Vidalia onion vinaigrette that you can get at Costco. I think it's made by Virginia Honey Co. It's about the only vinaigrette dressing I actually like, because the sweetness of the onion balances the tartness of the vinegar. (I don't like vinegar.) If I can't have that, then Ranch.

Do you drink: Hardly at all. I don't remember the last time I had an alcoholic beverage, actually. I have been pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving, though not recently.

What type of deodorant do you use: Whatever's on sale usually, as long as it has a "sport" or "fresh" smell. I think right now it's Right Guard, but I couldn't swear to it.

Favorite shampoo or conditioner: See above. I don't know what brand I'm currently using. It's strawberry-scented though.

Have you ever been skinny dipping: Not that I recall.

Do you make fun of people: Oh yeah, all the time! I try not to be mean-spirited about it though.

Favorite color: Blue. That's why you're at Blue Armadillo instead of Green Armadillo. (That's a cool name though.)

Have you ever been convicted of a crime: I've never been convicted of a felony. I've had my share of moving violations.

Best friend: CJ. I met CJ on AOL. We both frequented the Melrose Place forum. It became clear over the course of several months that we lived fairly close to one another, and after one abortive attempt to meet in person -- she invited me to a Grateful Dead show, but I couldn't go -- we finally met early in 1995. She's been my best friend ever since.

One pillow or two:
Two.

Pets: None. I'm mildly allergic to cats and I think dogs smell funny. I had hamsters when I was a kid but haven't had the urge to get one as an adult. If I had a pet, I'd like to have a talking parrot. One of my clients has a talking parrot named Leo, and it's a lot of fun. Sometimes when I'm there it will sit on my shoulder.

Favorite movies: The top five (in alphabetical order) are Casablanca, Say Anything..., Singin' In the Rain, The Truman Show, and Witness. On the surface these five movies may not seem to have much in common, but they're all romances. I'm just a romantic fool, I guess.

Favorite type of music: There are a lot of names for the kind of music I like best: pop/rock, power pop, jangle pop, post-punk. Put the Beatles at the top of the list -- I'm listening the Beatles 1 as I write this -- followed closely by Ben Folds Five. I also like concert band music.

Wait, there's more! On to page two
