In 1992, Christopher McCandless starved to death on Alaska's Stampede Trail. In 1996, Jon Krakauer wrote a book about it, Into the Wild. I haven't read the book, but nevertheless I found this Anchorage Press article about how the abandoned bus in which McCandless died has become a tourist attraction. (Link via Pop Culture Junk Mail.)
