Featured link of the week: Roger
Ebert
I used to see a lot of movies, but in recent years I've hardly seen any. The
tickets have gotten so expensive -- the matinee showings are up to six bucks at
my local theatre -- and most of the movies just aren't very good. I still like
to follow the industry and read the reviews, so that if I do decide to see a
movie I'll know what's good, or less bad.
Roger Ebert is my favorite reviewer. I find that his tastes and mine frequently
intersect. But what I like better than the reviews is his bi-weekly Ask the
Movie Answer Man column. I've picked up more trivia from those columns than from
almost any other single source.
Other movie review links:
-
Mr. Cranky - Mr.
Cranky has never reviewed a movie he liked. There are some movies he hates
less than others, but he is never at a loss for something bad to say. His
reviews are, of course, hysterical.
- James Berardinelli
- I admire James Berardinelli. He goes to the movies because he likes going to
the movies. He reviews them for fun. As far as I can tell he gets nothing for
it, except invitations to advance screenings (which he has to drive 60 miles
to attend). But I guess if you love going to movies that much, the advance
screen invitations are reward enough.
- The Chicago
Reader on Film - Ebert and Berardinelli are good for reviews of the most
recent releases, and occasionally review other more obscure films. Jonathan
Rosenbaum, the film critic for the Chicago Reader, largely eschews the
major releases in favor of long reviews of art films. I read Rosenbaum to keep
up on the more obscure movies that I will probably never see.
