Featured link of the week: Playful Puppets

I saw a lot of neat craft exhibits at the Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival this weekend, so I'm going to feature the web sites of some of the better vendors I saw.

Playful Puppets makes, as the name suggests, puppets. What makes their puppets interesting is that they make a line of puppets especially designed for use by speech therapists. Whereas most puppets only have a mouth, these have tongues, teeth and lips as well. Speech therapists use these puppets to demonstrate the proper position of the tongue against the teeth and lips to correctly form a certain sound.

Other crafty links:

  • Kitty's Quilts - Kitty's quilts are very interesting. Rather than using traditional quilt patterns, she designs what she calls "impressionistic watercolor" quilts. Basically, she uses traditional quilting techniques to create pictures. They are really quite remarkable works of art.
  • Mantels and More - Mantels and More specializes in (duh) fireplace mantels, but they also make (duh) more than that. They make gorgeous butcher block tables, for example, and they displayed some really nice custom furniture. The mantels are nice too.
  • Metal Expressions - Metal Expressions makes metal sculptures. I particularly admired their abstract wall hangings and their fountains. Looking at their work, I was struck by the idea that they would be able to create some truly striking menorahs and mezuzzas. I'm not sure why I thought that, not being Jewish ... but nevertheless. If I ever have the money maybe I will commission one for Sharon and David.
  • Drew's Art Glass - There were a lot of vendors selling stained glass, but Drew's Art Glass was the best. He had pieces that were very elegant but others that were very whimsical.
